I'm now convinced the whole thing is a satire.
Looking around their web page I found the following:
"The Onion is a diversified online entertainment company positioned for
tremendous growth, presenting a wealth of advertising and marketing
opportunities."
"The Onion is America's most popular humor magazine. ..."
under "press clippings" there was:
Press Clippings
"Heir apparent to The National Lampoon and Spy."
Entertainment Weekly
"...the most popular humor periodical in world history..."
The New Yorker
"...laugh-out-loud..."
Playboy
"A perfect send-up..."
Atlantic Monthly
"Brutal satire...the first infusion of such edgy
comedy since the heyday of the Second City
comedy troupe in the 1970s."
Chicago Tribune
"...the most consistently hilarious spot on the
flogged dead horse of American comedy"
Esquire
etc.
Phew, that's a relief. I was really worried. I mean,
I almost wrote Greene an e-mail. That would have
been embarrassing. :)
