Challenges to teaching biology

I saw a scene on a TV show the other night - a black woman was talking to a
black child about his father's statement that they should only hang out with
their own kind. Her response wasn't, 'Your father is a horrible bigot -
don't be like him.' It was, 'Your father is a wonderful man, and he is
right. But, my kind of people are people who are kind and generous and
funny. (My white friend) is all of those things and she is my best friend.'

A survey showed recently, that on most issues, 60-80% of the US population
is moderate. The extremists on both sides ruin it for the rest of us. I know
that the school districts, under pressure from the 'evolutionists' would
probably hang teachers out to dry if they did this - but, in an ideal and
moderate world - what the students' learned at home would be voiced in the
classroom. This column is largely devoted to the reconciling of evolution
and the clockmaker. That discussion belongs in the classroom - when students
bring it up. Teenagers absolutely do not need someone else telling them
their parents are wrong.
