It is not too surprising that animals may appear sheepish after making a
mistake :)
The second part of Twain's claim is more distinctive, however-humans are
animals capable of moral error. This does not help with some of the difficult
cases already cited (exactly what pets may "think" under human influence; how
to ensure that people incapable of clear communication are considered human;
dealing with fossil remains not directly connected with moral behavior; etc.),
but is a manifestation of the marred version of God's image in us.
