It has not been made clear that the vent bacteria are not anaerobic,
perhaps because of wishful thinking about their role in early evolution.
They live in the borderline water, where there is some oxygen, not
right inside the vents. I was told this by a specialist in the field, in
response to my suggestion that these bacteria might colonize Venus.
