Biblical Question - When did it first rain?

Hi!

I've been on the list for a couple of weeks and am enjoying the discussions
though, as a complete layman on this, some of the information goes well over
my head!

My question is: Am I right to say that it didn't actually rain until the
heavens were opened for the flood?

Genesis 2:5 - 6 says: "and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth
and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent
rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, but streams came up
from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground -"

I note that it says it didn't rain but that streams (or 'mists') watered the
whole surface. In Gen. 2:10 it says that it was the great river that watered
the garden. Rain is not mentioned until Gen. 7:12: "And rain fell on the earth
for forty days and forty nights."

I had thought that this explains why a rainbow had never previously been seen
because there had been no rain to produce the effect?

If this is right, what would the pre-flood climate / landscape have been like
without the weather patterns associated with rain?

Thanks for any response,
Fred.
