Regarding the number of times the eye may have evolved, see
Salvini-Plawen L, Mayr E. 1977. On the evkolution of
photoreceptors and eyes. Evolutionary Biology
10:207-263. As I recall they suggest that the eye may
have evolved as many as 65 times. Sorry no time for a
formal personal introducton now. Just take the data.
