RE: [asa] MLK day

Seems to me that the science/religion quote from MLK is way too simplified, to the point of sentimental nonsense.

For example:
"Science investigates; religion interprets."

Does this mean science doesn't "interpret?"

For example:
"Science gives humankind knowledge which is power; religion gives humankind wisdom which is control."

Are power and control supposed to be opposite things? Doesn't religion (a relationship with Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit) give one "power?" Obviously.

For example:
"Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values."

This means religion doesn't deal with facts?

Sorry- looks like uneducated nonsense to me.

I applaud MLK for what he accomplished in civil rights- but these statements look like nonsense and are indefensible.

All:

This quotation was posted on another listserve. I thought it very
insightful and appropriate for remembering MLK this week.

"Softmindedness often invades religion. ... Softminded persons have
revised the Beautitudes to read "Blessed are the pure in ignorance:
for
they shall see God." This has led to a widespread belief that there is
a conflict between science and religion. But this is not true. There
may be a conflict between softminded religionists and toughminded
scientists, but not between science and religion. ... Science
investigates; religion interprets. Science gives humankind knowledge
which is power; religion gives humankind wisdom which is control.
Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values.
The
two are not rivals. They are complementary."
