[asa] PvM's View of What Science IS

Though it may appear rather flattering to have his name in the title of another thread at ASA, this thread is a direct challenge to his position about ‘ID is scientifically vacuous’ repetitions.

Could Pim please define ‘what science is’ in his opinion? This would be a positive contribution so that others at ASA can better understand his views.

This question is asked because, aside from links to others’ views, I have seen virtually NOTHING POSITIVE come from Pim himself. He claims to be a Christian who is/was a scientist (i.e. geologist/oceanographer) and thus he should be able to say what his view of ‘science’ is because he is/was a scientist. This would give him an opportunity to escape from the impression that he doesn’t contribute anything to positive knowledge, but rather only negatively argues against ‘intelligent design’ theories, thus, to avoid the label of ‘reactionary.’

We shouldn’t necessarily expect Pim’s views of ‘science’ to be the same as Iain Strachan’s views (as a computer scientist, biologist) or as George Murphy’s views (as a physicist/theologian/priest) or as Ted Davis’ views (as a historian of science). But rather, by hearing what are particularly Pim’s views, perhaps we will be enlightened about his ‘philosophy of science.’ If he has no ‘philosophy of science’ then we should expect his silence on issues about ‘philosophy of science’ expressed by others.

If PvM defines what ‘science’ is, in his opinion, then it will provide people who disagree with him a reference in future discourse.

Of course, if he is unwilling to say ‘what science is,’ at least, according to him, then the charge of ‘ID is scientifically vacuous’ should henceforth be interpreted as itself a vacuous statement. And no one should pay it any attention, despite the fact that he can post to this list-serve as often (up to three times a day) as he wants.

  Regards,

  Gregory
