Just spent a few minutes digging further into Boyd's blog. Actually, he is
indeed talking about (resurrecting?) the Gap Theory. See:

Whatever else you think of Boyd, you have to admire his willingness to
listen to others and respect the evidence even when it contradicts a pet
theory of his. (I realize this shouldn't be a big deal, especially for
Christians, but honestly our collective record hasn't been real great in
this area).
