Bill, Newton was unitarian. While Ted Davis can speak much better than I
about this, "Arian" might be a good label. Among Newton's unpublished
manuscripts in Trinity College, Cambridge (irony of ironies) are pages of
quotations from the church fathers that Newton collated, seeking evidence
against the doctrine of the Trinity. (Ted's mentor at Indiana University
was Sam Westfall, who probably knew those manuscripts better than anyone
else in our time; I also had the privilege of being guided by Sam during my
first sabbatical. He had just come back from a summer in the Trinity
library going through the Newton theological manuscripts and had some neat
stories to tell.)
