George,
Yes, thank you for making this important point. However, it is
abundantly clear that we are some considerable way from the fulfilment
of Phil.2:9-11: "...God hath highly exalted him, and given him a name
which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow...and that every tongue should confess that Jesus is Lord to the
glory of God the Father." In other words, we have yet to witness _in
fact_ the destruction of the 'wisdom of the wise'. I therefore suggest
that in 1Cor.1:19 Paul is speaking of what _must_ eventually occur on
earth _because of the cross_.
With respect to the Scriptures it is clear that certain prophecies may
underpin _several_ subsequent events. As an example, we need look no
further than that represented in the early verses of Is.29 - regarding
which Matthew Henry observes, "This woe to Ariel...points to...the
besieging of Jerusalem by the Assyrian army...yet it is applicable to
the destruction of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, and its last desolation
by the Romans."
I believe the same to be true of Is.29:14. What I have taken to be its
imminent fulfilment may now be regarded as an important step in the
ultimate realisation of Phil.2:9-11. In the context of Is.13-17 it is
clear that God proposes to deal with those who either _deny_ him or
whose allegiance to him is somehow _feigned_. The remaining verses of
the chapter are particularly uplifting, as I'm sure you'll agree.
I therefore see no reason to retract or modify what I've already said.
Shalom,
Vernon
