As others have already stated, the standards adapted by the BOE have not
yet been put into force. Since the results of the primary election have
assured that the "conservative" board members will no longer have a
majority, these standards will most likely be overturned and the quality
standards originally proposed voted in to replace them. However, a lot of
public education remains to be done. Also, those who sought the removal of
historical science from the standards are already pursuing other avenues
(eg influencing local school boards) to accomplish their goals.
I also don't think that the problems facing Kansas are at all unique. They
just were elevated to a higher level of public and national scrutiny.
