No inherent direction or goal might be a good wording (as opposed to
God's directing of it). One could argue, however, that there are
directions imposed by selection and by random trends with limits (e.g., if
the number of cells in a lineage of organisms varies randomly but starts
at one, then over time the trend will be to higher average number of
cells because the random variation started at one extreme.)
