• TRAVELING to Oral Roberts University by Car - Plane - Bus - Train

• TRAVELING inside Tulsa

using local bus service from Tulsa Transit (with a trip planner) might be useful if you travel to Tulsa by plane or bus.

• by DRIVING

• SHARING RIDES

If you're driving (or flying), maybe you can help others get to the conference (they will appreciate this) if you use our Ride-Forum Threads, and do this ASAP.

Why ASAP?  Because using our forum-thread for Car Drivers & Riders early may help others make their plans.  For example, if they can ride with you, they may do this instead of buying a ticket for a plane or bus.  But they must know that you're driving before they buy their ticket — and usually the sooner a ticket is purchased the cheaper it is, and more scheduling options are still open — so if you post your “ride offered” information ASAP this may help someone make plans.  Thanks!   :<)

Why share?  Sharing is cheaper for everyone, more planet-friendly (conserve resources, reduce emissions), and you can “start the conference early” (and make it last longer on the way back) with interesting conversations during your trips.

How?  click this link and Sign In (as a member of ASA, or first register for free);  enter one of the two forums for "ASA Meetings" — for Car Drivers & Riders or from Airport (sharing rides) — and read the first post (by me, C. Rusbult) for an overview, look at messages already posted, then (if you want) write your message.

• DRIVING DIRECTIONS

For your GPS navigation system (or GoogleMaps - Mapquest - YahooMaps [no longer available]) the address of Oral Roberts University is 7777 South Lewis Ave, Tulsa OK 74171, then park in Lot H for ASA Registration in Hamill Student Center.  ORU provides driving directions.

• by FLYING

If you're flying (or driving), please use the Ride Board, and do this ASAP.  Why?  Because for ground transport some options are cheaper when shared, and using our Ride Forum from Airport might help you find a partner(s) to share a ride.  And ASA will help you plan your return trip from ORU to TUL.

Tulsa International Airport is TUL, and its website (tulsaairports.com) has a tab for "To and From TUL" with links for buses & shuttles - taxis - rental cars.  Unless you rent a car, you have only two options:  a public bus (cheaper) or taxi (faster).

• Public Bus (Tulsa Transit) - To ride on a local city bus, use their Trip Planner by entering "Tulsa International Airport, E Apache St, Tulsa, 74115" [then they make you select the address] and "7777 S Lewis Ave, Tulsa, 74136" plus your choices for Time and Options, to get plans.  Or use Google's Trip Planner and begin from "Tulsa International Airport" to get plans.  The trip is cheap — $1.75, or $0.85 for seniors (62 or older) — and medium slow (typically 80-95 minutes, with a walking distance of 0.1 mile)* while you get a Tour of Tulsa.  I've done many experiments with their Trip Planner, as described below, and the best strategy seems to be:  take Bus 203 from TUL into Downtown Tulsa, then Bus 105 or 112 (whichever arrives first) to ORU.  Here are the results of some experiments:

Putting different times into the Planner can produce different results.  For example, on July 21 for one starting time the best option was 203 (to downtown) + 112 (south to ORU) with a trip time of 79 minutes ;  a second option, on 203+105, was 100 minutes, mainly due to the timing of connections.  But with another starting time the best option was 203+105, taking 85 minutes;  evidently with this starting time the 105 arrived first, because 203+112 took 109 minutes.
    * When using the Trip Planner of Google, the results show a total walking distance of only 0.1 mile, after you arrive at ORU, and in some Trip Plans it adds 0.2 miles from airport to bus stop.  By contrast, in the Trip Planner results for Tulsa Transit there is a "walking distance" of 1.56 miles, which seems wrong because on their map I don't see any large distance-gaps that would require long walking.
With some starting times, both Planners (with Google, and with Tulsa Transit it seemed to happen more often when using "Landmark" instead of "Address" for the Airport) sometimes suggest a more complex route with 2 transfers to get from TUL to Downtown;  this also will work, and the overall trip times are similar, but having one transfer (not two) is simpler.

• Taxi - The airport's taxi-page gives "not to exceed" rates, but some services might be cheaper than this. {10 registered taxi companies serve TUL, says World Airport Guides}   The airport's rate-map shows the cost for TUL to ORU (near bottom/center of map) in the range of $30-$40 for 1 person, but probably it will cost $4 extra for a second person.  Or, using the "not to exceed" rates from the taxi-page and google-maps (saying the trip-distance is 12.6 miles, or 15.3 miles)* you can calculate a basic cost of [$2.00 + 12.6/.2(.40) = $27.20] plus $3 (if 1 person, 1 bag) or $7 (if 2 people, 1 bag each) for the "Tolls and Fees" they list, which seems consistent with their estimate of $33 for a trip (to Southern Hills Marriot) of 14 miles.  This might be a good option if you have a partner to split the cost, or if in this situation your time is more important than your money.  But... *GoogleMaps and Mapquest show the distance as about 15.2 miles (by freeways, before dragging the route westward to the straighter Memorial Drive which makes the trip 12.6 miles) and 2.6 miles extra (15.2-12.6) would cost an extra $5.20.   {July 21, I checked UBER, and their rates for uberX [cheapest] is $26-34, maybe a little cheaper but not much.}

Shuttles - TUL airport's page for Buses & Shuttles lists 4 shuttles, but none of these shuttles is useful for getting from TUL to ORU:  I called Pelivan Transit, and they don't drive from the airport into Tulsa;  Stillwater is far away to the east, and Bartlesville & Skiatook are north of the airport (while ORU is south) so these are not options.   /   Evidently, except for hotel-shuttles there are no private shuttle companies operating from TUL into Tulsa.  At least that's what internet info (the airport's bus/shuttle-page, and the "more..." sources below) imply.  If this implication is wrong, please tell me, craigru178-att-yahoo-daut-caum.

• For the return trip, from Oral Roberts to TUL airport, at the conference there will be an old-fashioned physical Sharing Board where you can write information, offers, and requests.

• by BUS

Megabus doesn't have routes in Oklahoma.

Greyhound Bus — Usually, rates are much cheaper if you purchase in advance: Deals and Discounts.

The station in Tulsa is "317 S Detroit, Tulsa, OK 74120" which (along with "7777 South Lewis Ave, 74171" for Oral Roberts) you can enter into a trip planner of the local bus system to get the plan for a 35-minute trip on the "112 Lewis/Jenks Southbound" bus, for $1.75.

an example fare on Greyhound:  A two-way trip from St. Louis is $94 (for Advance Purchase, checked April 7) and takes 8-9 hours, leaves 4 times/day.

• by TRAIN

Amtrak doesn't go to Tulsa, but it has a route from Fort Worth to Oklahoma City, with 5 stations in OK.

LODGING and MEALS

Both are available at Oral Roberts University – see Meeting Brochure (pages 7, 8-9).

Benefits of On-Campus Lodging & Meals:  ASA's Annual Meetings are my favorite conferences, and one reason is their meal policy because we all eat together.  This is a great way for everyone to meet and get involved with informal conversations, 3 times each day. (in addition to discussions between talks and at night)   Most people stay on-campus, which also makes meeting-and-talking easier, as I (Craig Rusbult, writer of this travel-page) explain here.
