As an evolutionist who is totally committed to overturning YEC, I am going
to surprise people with this comment. Frankly, this is a representative
republic in action. If the representatives of Kansas or anywhere want to
turn back from even looking at scientific theories, they have a right to go
that way. It is called representation. While I think the path Kansas is
taking is a path into self-delusion, the people do have a right to chose
that path.
A parallel. In Algeria a few years ago, they were about to hold an
election, a free election. The islamic fundamentalists appeared poised for
an electoral landslide. The military stepped in to stop that possibility.
The result was a bloody civil war in which any foreign oil workers were
shot. Some of my colleagues were at risk. Now, I am not completely sure
that the frustration of the democratic process was worth that price.
So those who bemoan the Kansas decision, if you are in Kansas, get off your
butt and go to work to turn out those who voted for it at the next election.
Otherwise, quite complaining. It sounds like you all are closet dictators
who wish to tell the adults of Kansas what is best for them and what they
should believe. And more importantly, it falls into the hands of the YECs
who think you all are trying to force your beliefs down their throats--and
they may be correct! Our representative republic has operated as it should
have.
