That's difficult to do without also imparing general metabolism to the point
where the organism becomes nonviable.

Bacterial growth rates are so high that if they do not die they would cover
the earth within only few days; Adam and Eve would have been ankle-deep in
them. To reduce bacterial growth rates to the point where this would not
happen would reduce their overall metabolism to the point that they could no
longer keep themselves alive.
