FWIW I recall as a lad of 5 or 6 my father telling me that a rocket had
crashed on the moon (I was very interested in rockets) and that they were
surprised to find that the surface was hard and that the rocket didn't sink
in dust. If that memory is reliable, then the event has to have taken place
no later than 1967 (we moved from the house associated with that memory
that summer.) The idea that the moon was dustcovered must have been
popular; but refuted long before the manned lunar landings.
