Try Ernst Mayr's little book _One Long Argument_. It
is a concise look at the question. Mayr talks about
the components of Darwinism (Darwin's five theories),
how they fared subsequent to their introduction, and
how the neo-Darwinian synthesis was formed, and what
components went into that.
