The interesting point is not the expected disagreements between Gould
and Dawkins, but the irreconcilable conclusions that they lead to if
taken to their natural limits. Is it punctuated, gradual, or
punctuated + gradual? The first by itself is unthinkable (hopeful
monster or special creation), the second by itself is not supported by
the fossil record as we know it, and the third is supra-controversial:
no ancestors, sudden appearances, rapid changes and stasis, stasis and
stasis. Gould contradicts himself by calling himself a Darwinist and
not being truly one, while Dawkins honors "unsupported" gradualism.
This is really a good fight that will gradually get more punctuated. :-)
