Dennis -- one book which deals directly with the subject is by
Julian Jaynes and is titled "The Origin of Consciousness in the
Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind>' It does about as best a job
as is possible given the presupposition of methodological naturalism!
It's a 1976 publication date -- a little long in the tooth now -- no
doubt there have been arguments published since then in both
defense and support.
