I don't have access to Gilbert's book. Perhaps you can post the
relevant
section that gives a genetic mechanism that can change a mesonychid
into an ambulocetus?
I have read Gould's article in HTAHT pp187-198. I can see nothing that
would suggest a genetic mechanism that could change a mesonychid into
an ambulocetus.
