Under the topic of 21st century communications and the academy:

This week the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, became the
first US University to switch to a totally online newspaper. And it is the
first such paper to be part of the AP.

They are now training journalists to be "backpack journalists" who work in
all media types. The 100% online paper allows the university to deal with
breaking stories instead of summarizing stories at the end of the week. By
not bearing the cost of printing hardcopy newsprint they were able to
double their paid staff.

A senior reported they couldn't give away 2000 copies to an 11,000+ student
body. But they have had tremendous input from the students now. And the
students are able to participate and give them feedback, which was not
happening previously.
