I have had some experience in dealing with students from different
cultures and have had input from Americans who have lived in countries
with those different cultures. Sometimes these people have different
expectations about bargaining with someone. When I had a case of a
foreign student who cheated, someone familiar with the culture told me
that cheating was not frowned upon; getting caught was. I was told that
in India compassion for the unfortunate was less likely because it was
assumed that these people were suffering for what they had done in a
previous life.
