Addendum:

I forgot in my previous post to state the rather important piece of
information that birds evolved long before the end of the Cretaceous.
In fact the earliest birds appear in the late Jurassic with some
suggestion that the time will be pushed back to the middle Jurassic.
By the end of the Cretaceous birds were actually quite diverse,
although they included many primitive forms that did go extinct at the
end of the Cretaceous with the other dinosaurs. The earliest modern
groups of birds were shore birds.
