I wish you did not contrast "evangelical Christians" with
"scientists." It is a false and misleading idea. I know -- a lot of
people do it! But a person can be both! Otherwise the ASA is just a
fluke.

My own view, as a Christian (probably "evangelical," but I'm unsure of
how that adjective is interpreted these days) is that while Christ's
return is both certain and "imminent," it may or may not be "very
soon."
