I think it was Jonathan Edwards who remarked that humanity was like a
drunk who is always falling off the horse on one side and then
getting back on and falling off the other side.

You could modify this to say that, if you have just been shocked by
realizing that you almost walked off a cliff, you may jump backwards
so far that you far off the other cliff behind you. I think that in
our present predicament regarding energy, the economy and
warming/pollution, we may have the same situation.

If we take such drastic action on warming that we push a recession
into a world wide depression, we won't have the economic resources to
make the changes we need in our energy economy - it's going to take a
lot of capital, and an awful lot of it is tied up as debt right now.

So it's all very, very complicated. In fact, it's quite beyond any of
us or all of us together (even the remarkable savants on this list)
to figure it out and predict what the consequences of any course of
action will be. We (the human race) have to come to some decisions
and do some things, but unless we (each of us, as many as possible)
repent of our own sins and admit to God that we need to be guided in
all this, I'm not real optimistic about the outcome.

One thing remains true, whatever happens. "All those who call upon
the name of the Lord will be saved."
