I think one of the positives of my own situation is that being the pastor of the congregation I was preaching biblically based sermons LOOOOONG before the issue of YECism even raised its head.

So I suspect that the folks in my congregation who are (or tend toward) YEC tend to find themselves in a bit of a confusion about the question of evolution and the bible.

On the one hand, they imagine that there IS a fundamental contradiction between the two.

On the other hand, they know me to accept evolution AND have a high view of scripture.

Indeed, I had a conversation with a newer chap in my congregation who was utterly amazed when - after attending the church for about six months - he discovered that I am not opposed to evolution.

Anyway, the point is that I think that perhaps the best way to disabuse the notion that one can accept evolution and have a high view of scripture is simply to live the two out in practice. I think that seeing that done is perhaps the best evidence that we don't have to choose one over the other. And once that realization is made it probably gives people the confidence to explore the question without feeling a challenge to their faith.
