I meant "solvent" in a negative sense. (& the "universal solvent" is an ancient alchemical goal - though there's the old joke, "If you find it, what will you keep it in?") I don't think its use in the sense of something that "provides a solution" is common, at least in the U.S., though I see in my old Webster's 2d that that's OK.
