Re: [asa] Question from one of my students

Among other things, I would suggest looking at Augustine's interpretation
of the first chapter of Genesis. He noted that the first three days
cannot be 24-hour days because the markers were not made till the fourth
day. This beats the attempt to interpret the qal as past tense everyplace
but in the fourth day, when it becomes past perfect. Note also that
Augustine understood the universe to have been created instantaneously.

I love his approach to those who try to contravene common sense knowledge
(because he was prescientific, we can apply his dictum to scientific
discovery) from their interpretation of scripture, though he did make a
serious mistake himself in declaring that there could not be antipodeans.

Trees producing fruit with seeds (third day) did not antedate fish (fifth
day), nor did birds and fish appear on earth simultaneously. Birds and
mammals, rather, developed about the same time. Also consider Paul
Seely's masterful discussion of the meanings of the Hebrew terms and
their connection to ancient cosmogony.
