To begin with, we know that the universe _is_ creation is from the
scriptures which bear witness to God's revelation. Science helps us to
understand what that creation is, what its laws are, &c. Science by itself
can't tell us that the world is creation but studies the world only as
"nature," "cosmos" &c. OTOH, scripture is not a very good guide for a
scientific understanding of the world since its purpose is to speak about
how the world is related to God and what God's intentions for the world are.
