RE: [asa] discussion of concordism essay

I do not think the faith of a Christian is derived from knowledge of Scripture only. The need of human beings to believe is an integral part of what constitutes being a human. Scripture was not written to prove that there is a God and that Jesus was His Son. Scripture is the witness of those who were before us. Of course, when it comes to Genesis, what truth is there is given to man; I suppose just as truth was given to Galileo, Newton, Planck, Faraday, etc.

I have frequently said that the really important meaning of inerrancy is that
the Scriptures will infallibly guide those who truly seek to know God. However,
certain kinds of errors in Scripture could be disconcerting. For example Luke 2
says "This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of
Syria." Now if we found that there never was a Quirinius who was governor of
Syria, perhaps that wouldn't shake our faith, but I for one would wonder how
God allowed Luke to be so careless about his history. One can find other
examples. Accurate discussion of details of history and daily life help to
establish Scripture as an authentic account. My question is, "How much
inaccuracy can we tolerate?"
