Like Michael Roberts, I also encountered YEC for the first time in the
mid-1970s after I had completed a science degree--physics in my case. I
recall an initial fascination lasting several hours, followed by an almost
immediate realization that this was all bunk. I don't recall any anger,
just a rapidly passing disappointment.

At that time, virtually all of the evangelical and fundamentalists
preachers I heard or read (and there were many such) were some type of OEC,
not YEC. One of them in fact was RC Sproul, in whom I had much interest.
He has since been persuaded somehow that YECism is the best interpretation.
He was IMO more sensible in the old days.
