N.T. Wright's new book _Simply Christian_ has a nice little section in
Chapter 14 on the challenge interpretation, in which he talks about the the
terms "literal" and "metaphorical" with regard to scripture:
<Begin quote>
What does it mean to "take the Bible literally"? What would it mean to read
it "metaphorically"? Is this even a helpful way of putting the question?
Broadly speaking: no, it isn't. The old distinction between "literal" and
"metaphorical" need to be shaken up a bit, for a start, before we can do
anything useful with it.
<End quote>
Wright's discussion that follows the above quotation is succinct and simple
enough that I would recommend it to friends that need help grasping this
concept.
