My high school physics teacher loaned me a science fiction book, 'The Black
Cloud'. I haven't read it in thirty years, but I still remember the
description. Imagine that there is a cloud of beings, each distinct and
individual, but joined together such that if one of them has a thought, they
all hear his thought within a fraction of a second. Each answering thought
is communicated in the same way. If one feels pain, the pain is felt by all.
Whatever is done, or thought by one becomes a part of all of them.
There was another science fiction story where earth was sprinkled with a
disease that allowed mind reading out to a certain distance. People were
going insane. The story ended with earth being depleted of all resources in
order to launch each person in their own little spaceship in order for each
to get away from the thought voices of the others.
And then there is the dominion in Star Trek. The shape shifters can be
individual, or they can meld into one great lake of mercury.
