The issues are different for different people, although there are a few
that seem to dominate.
In my experience, the dominant issues are the authority and proper
interpretation of scripture,
the problem of pain, and the nature of humanity and original sin.
To find out the issues that are important to a given individual
requires persistent questioning.
Many people have never really thought through what the fundamental
issues are
that are driving their position on a particular issue. It is important
for them (as it is for all of us)
to see what theological assumptions are being made, and to evaluate if
those assumptions are
valid.
I don't think that this can be done very well, except face-to-face. It
is something that will take a
commitment to extended dialog and discussion.
