Regarding the "filioque" clause, perhaps there is enough ambiguity in the
ASA statement to include both versions. And if at some gathering of ASAers,
the Nicene Creed should happen to be recited, the eastern Orthodox members
might do what they do when worshipping at my Episcopal parish: fall silent
in the Creed at "and the son."
Frankly, the whole matter of "procession" baffles me. I prefer the attitude
of a Greek Orthodox bishop at a seminary on the island of Crete, who was
asked by an Anglican priest I know to explain the Trinity: "Ah, the
Treeneety," he replied, after a brief pause, "eet ees a greaaat meestery!"
