A distinction that may partially underlie some of the differences expressed is the difference between asking whether Tillich or anyone else is a Christian versus asking whether their teaching is Christian. To take a less controversial example, someone with very limited mental abilities might have a rather inaccurate understanding of Christian doctrine, yet still could be a Christian. Likewise, I do not see Tillich's theology as a viable Christian option, but I cannot assess the status of his own faith or lack thereof.
