The mitochondrial Eve theory which holds that we are all descended from a
single female who lived 200,000 years ago and upon which many apologists
have rested their case has received a fairly severe blow in a documented
case of paternal inheritance of mtDNA. If there is paternal inheritance of
mtDNA (even rarely) the calculations of when Eve lived, indeed the entire
theory would be way off. Paternal inheritance would push Eve far back into
the past meaning that Eve could not be an anatomically modern human but
rather an archaic form of humanity. The New England Journal of Medicine
Aug. 22, 2002 has an article by M. Schwartz and J. Vissing, Paternal
Inheritance of Mitochondrial DNA. A popular report can be found at

This phenomenon has been previously reported but everyone ignored it acting
like paternal inheritance can't happen. See Ankel-Simons, Friderun, and Jim
M. Cummins. "Misconceptions About
Mitochondria and Mammalian Fertilization: Implications for Theories on
Human Evolution." Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 93, no. November (1996):
