The term fundamentalist seems to have undergone quite a bit of evolution
in the last 90 years until its range of uses makes its meaning rather
fuzzy. It is supposedly derived from the publication, The Fundamentals,
but it seems to have become a pejorative term applied to those who are
devoutly religious and with whom one disagrees. This now includes Islamic
    terrorists.

The Fundamentals were written as an answer to the teachings of the higher
criticism of the early 20th century. If YEC's read the Fundamentals'
article on science by James Orr, they would be very upset. Orr endorsed
the view that the days of Genesis 1 were eons, and he even suggested that
evolution was a new name for creation.
