An interesting hypothesis about consciousness has been proposed:
Tannenbaum A.S., "The sense of consciousness", Journal of Theoretical
Biology 211 (2001), 377-391.
Apart from the usual problems with the possible mechanisms of the
evolution of novel functionalities, it sounds quite reasonable, at least
to me as a non-specialist in this field. It might indicate that higher
animals do indeed have consciousness - perhaps also indicated by the
expression "living souls" in Genesis 1:20. This, however, would imply
that human personality and I-consciousness, is of a higher order,
corresponding to the "image of God" of Gen.1:26.
Does anyone have any comments re. this paper - particularly the
specialists among you?
