            I have to utter a heretical good word for the enlightenment. Certainly the theological, or anti-theological presuppositions of the philosophes were unfortunate. But at least they thought that the world made sense & could be understood by scientific investigation. I that regard they
    certainly come closer to a Christian understanding of the universe than does a great deal of post-modern thought that rejects the idea of any kind of objective truth.
