Animals want to pass their genes. What the HELL does a lion, for
    instance, know about genes? Moorad

    Lucy responds:

Moorad, I did not have the chance to watch the show, so I may be
speaking out of turn here. However, if your quote is accurate, I
suspect that unfortunate wording has led to a somewhat anthropomorphic
idea. Rather than the word "want," which implies some kind of conscious
strategizing, they probably should have said (and probably meant) "are
programmed to..." In other words, animals (including humans) have an
extremely strong desire to mate. I don't think animals (including
humans) wake up in the morning and say to themselves, "I think I'll be
in the mood tonight." One either is in the mood or not with a huge
variety of environmental and hormonal influences affecting that ultimate
desire. We (including all other animals) are programmed to respond to
stimuli and viola! we're in the mood! Anyway, I wouldn't color the
whole idea by the unfortunate use of the word "want."
