I know Fritz Schaefer, and I think your characterization is accurate. He is (or at least was last I knew) on the board of the Intelligent Design part of the Discovery Institute. A part of their "big tent" strategy is to embrace all opponents of "Darwinism," even those on the YEC fringe that many might consider embarrassing. So, like the rest of the ID movement, he's reluctant to oppose falsehood when it comes from underneath the big tent, which I find a bit disappointing.
