Not sure if it was Gugarin, but the Soviets did announce that a cosmonaut had failed to see God on his trip into space. This was specifically commented upon by at least two apologists. C.S. Lewis observes that he would have been dismayed had they seen him, as such a local god would not be what he believed in. Apparently reporters tried to get a response from Billy Graham and only found Ruth in. She said that the cosmonaut would have seen God if he had only stepped outside.
