The AIBS (Am. Institute Biological Sciences)- needs people in about half the states (half are taken) to host a listserv on evolution for educators. It is to keep abreast of the creationism movements in many states education systems, and to provide a forum for networking and discussion.
As a Christian who is also a "evolutionary creationist" I believe that this is a great opportunity for Christians to have a voice in the list, because many subscribers might be coming from a "fed up with Christians" viewpoint. If any of you have the resources to host some of the listservs, please contact Judith Weis of AIBS at jweis@andromeda.rutgers.edu
These can be set up however the listowner likes, and doesn't require any real time committment. You don't have to monitor anything unless you want to, just host the site and listen in on whatever conversation happens.
Sign-up for states with listservs already set up are below (these have just started, so there aren't many subscribers yet). I run TX. About 50% of states still need a list!

To ESA members
:
As the president-elect of AIBS, I am undertaking a project to support the
teaching of evolution in the schools and combat efforts to teach creationism
in science classes. Im sure that most of you are aware of the events in
Kansas last year. The scientists and teachers in Kansas are now well
organized and will probably reverse that unfortunate policy. They got
organized after the policy was adopted. Since this is an issue that will not
go away, we should be well organized in other states in order to prevent
such efforts to undermine science teaching from succeeding. The project
involves the setting up of email listservs in each state, so that
scientists, teachers, and other concerned people can be in touch with each
other. The listservs can function as support groups for teachers trying to
teach evolution in a hostile atmosphere. They can also function for rapid
communications when there are policies being contemplated by school boards
or state legislatures that require input such as letters or
attendance/testifying at hearings. We are working with the Nat. Center for
Science Ed on this. What we need first is to have a person in each state
volunteer to be the list manager for that state. There are already list
managers for about half of the states (a couple of which had lists in place
already) . Their names and email addresses appear below. Some of these have
already set up their listservs, and the address to write to and message to
send in order to subscribe are provided. Please subscribe! If your state has
a contact person, but no list name, please write and encourage them to get
their listserv set up. If your state does not appear at all, that means no
one has volunteered to run the listserv. We need you! Usually staff at the
computer center should know how to set up listservs, and the time commitment
should not be great, unless there is some urgent issue being debated. Please
get in touch with me if you are willing to do this for your state.
