    The plain biological fact is that only one other species is as widely
    dispersed as humans, maybe two. These are the rat and the dog, both of whom
    follow man wherever he goes and hitch rides with man. Other than these two
    animals no other species was or is as widespread as H. erectus was 500,000
    years ago. By 1 million years ago Homo erectus had occupied 3 continents
    representing 63% of the worlds habitable land area.
