I'd need to look up exact details, if anyone is interested, but pi can turn
up in a mathematically random context. As I recall, the probability of a
short stick landing on a line when thrown onto a surface with regularly
spaced lines is related to pi. A very specific pattern is thus generated
with rather minimal intelligent agency.
