>The name Cainan is in the NT because it was in the LXX (Septuagint - Greek
>translation of the OT) but it is not in the Masoretic (Hebrew) Text of the
>OT.
>It is generally recognized as having been added by the Greek translators.
Here are the Septuagint passages in question:
Genesis 11:12: And Arphaxad lived a hundred and thirty-five years and begot
Cainan. And Arphaxad lived after he begot Cainan four hundred years and
begot sons and daughters, and died.
Genesis 11:13: And Cainan lived a hundred and thirty years and begot Salah;
and Cainan lived after he begot Salah three hundred and thirty years and
begot sons and daughters, and died.
Genesis 11:14,15: And Salah lived a hundred and thirty years and begot
Eber; and Salah lived after he begot Eber three hundred and thirty years
and begot sons and daughters, and died.
Methinks the likelihood of a deletion in the Masoretic text outweighs the
possibility of an addition to the Septuagint. Otherwise, Luke and the Holy
Spirit were mistaken.
