WASHINGTON 90, UTAH 86

SALT LAKE CITY -- Chris Webber collected 26 points and 13rebounds to lead the Washington Wizards to their first win inSalt Lake City in a decade, a 90-86 victory over the Utah Jazz.Juwan Howard added 19 points and 10 rebounds and Rod Stricklandchipped in with 17 points for the Wizards, who had lost 10straight games in Utah since a victory on Feb. 20, 1987. Thevictory was just the third for Washington in the last 21 meetingswith Utah.

Karl Malone registered 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Jazz,who lost only four home games all last season, including theplayoffs.

Washington trailed by 10 points early in the second quarterbefore Webber and Howard fueled a 19-6 burst. Webber had all nineof his second-quarter points in the run and Howard added six asthe Wizards claimed a 44-41 lead with 1:03 left in the half.

"It really took a lot of toughness to come back from the loss toMiami (Saturday)," Howard said. "Letting the game slip away, itwas a heartbreaker, but tonight we maintained our composure andcame out and rebounded well and from that frustrating evening wecame and got the job done here."

The Wizards built their biggest lead at 67-58 on two free throwsby Chris Whitney with 10:24 left in the fourth quarter. But Utahfought back behind six points from Shandon Anderson, and tied thegame, 78-78, on a pair of free throws by Malone with 3:22 to go.

Calbert Cheaney answered with a jumper 17 seconds later to givethe Wizards the lead for good. The Jazz were still within threepoints with less than 10 seconds left, but Terry Davis made onefree throw and, after Utah's Jeff Hornacek missed a 3-pointer,Cheaney made two more free throws with 4.3 seconds left for an89-83 advantage.

"We were able to come back and tie it up and then they hit someshots and we didn't," Hornacek said. "At the end they had RodStrickland penetrating and we had to come over and help out andmade him pass it off and Calbert Cheaney hit a couple of bigbaskets. But they just executed better than we did at the end."

Cheaney finished with 14 points for the Wizards, who shot 40percent from the field. Hornacek had 16 points and Greg Ostertaghad nine rebounds for the Jazz, who shot 43 percent.
