BOSTON (Reuter) -- An Alabama judge whose order that the Ten
Commandments must be removed from a courtroom sparked widespread protest
was named the winner of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award
Thursday.
Circuit Court Judge Charles Price will be presented with the $25,000
award by members of the late president's family at a ceremony on May 29.
"Though he may have been vilified by many of his constituents as being
anti-religion, Judge Price has in fact made a heroic stance to defend
our country's proud history of religious tolerance and diversity,"
Kennedy's daughter, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, said in a statement.
Price ruled in November that fellow Circuit Court Judge Roy Moore must
remove or modify a hand-carved tablet bearing the Ten Commandments from
his Anniston courtroom, because it violated the First Amendment's
separation of church and state.
